Dvd Authoring?

Hi guys,
Funny, I'm trying to get a DVD done too. Its for my wife's documentary film that I've become the self-appointed promoter/producer/designer on and now I think its time for DVD. We did a VHS run that is no longer available...anyhooo.
I know that authoring DVD is big business and requires top-gear. But I want to design the menu/interface so all the branding is the same - perhaps add a photo gallery and some production notes. A scene selection whould be nice, but that's too hard to produce right?
Anyway, I'm thinking that I can do the graphic deisng in Flash and then pass it on to a Post Prod. House to bang out a master. Am I on the right track? And do I need a professional team to author this or can I use a friend with a Mac DVD system.I shout up now.
