For some it is just a matter of preference. For me, it's performance. I may switch to Linux if it proves to be better for what I do (it was used for rendering LOTR).
I don't care about operating systems, you can get used to whatever.
As for looks, I think it should matter. If I pay $4k for anything, I want it to look good. Not too much to expect, I think. I'd pay a little more for better looks, if performance was the same.
It's not about 'it's all a tool at the end of the day thing', it's about saying 'do you want to take the fast car and get home early or the SUV and clunk around'.
I will consider any machine that give a noticable performace boost (like duals offer tremendous improvements for GI calculations, but for PS and web, not much).
Nothing is perfect, but there is the fastest.
