I'm in Boston and I can say that these things will absolutely help:
* post your portfolio on AIGA. If you are not a member, join. Why? Because Boston's creative community is small and making your name known will connect you to every agency in Boston.
* Go to AGIA networking events, I'd also recommend going to Media Bistro networking events (they are flush with art directors), and connecting with MITX (http://www.mitx.org/main.cfm).
* I've actually gotten work through LinkedIn as well.
