One of the best ways to see pretty much the whole city is to drive to Santa Monica.
Start at Wilshire & Ocean Blvd. and then drive up Wilshire the whole way to Beverly Hills. Then get onto Sunset and take that to Los Feliz. You'll see a lot in one go.
Otherwise, try Flavorpill or just pick up a copy of LA Weekly when you get there. It's the LA version of the Village Voice.
