Not to take anything away from Jucifer, I do think they are very good and super amazing live, but Jack White is an amazing songwriter.
His songwriting is tops with contemporaries. Among people like Elliott Smith, Conor Oberst, Jeff Tweedy, Ben Gibbard (though I dont like his music, he sure can construct some amazing words), Andrew Bird, Ryan Adams, Richard Ashcroft, Stephen Malkmus, Joanna Newsom, Jeff Buckley, Neko Case, Stephen Merrit, James Mercer, elvis costello et al
Certainly not the all time greats such as Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Townes Van Zant, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, John Lennon.
There is a big difference between whether you like a song for its over all construction and musicianship vs. purely the genius of writing lyrics and putting them to melody. Jack White would be widely considered to be one of the best by most academic musicologists.
