Yes, up until now.
This is Logo 2.0. Google sort of started the trend but never in this scale.And you guys do it but only once a year when you put a Xmas hat on your logos.
Logo 2.0 is dada logo, an anti-logo.

If you think it's okay for designers to sacrifice form on the altar of concept, you have missed your calling and might be better advised to pursue a career in the fine arts. I don't mean to be snide, but I think when designers get into such notions, they are being irresponsible and shortchanging their clients. Not to mention making the rest of us look bad.
Logo 2.0? Web 2.0? How about just good, thoughtful design that works equally well from both conceptual and aesthetic considerations? How about we come back from Amsterdam's red light district and lay off the LSD?
