I've heard lots of people bitching about bally's and their contracts (which are apparently nigh impossible to get out of).
If you're short on money, go to a Y (you'll get a great cross section of your local population, sketchy and all), if not, find all the gyms in your area and go there for visits/test workouts, pick the one you like best.
