while i don't fully understand the need to celebrate one's birthday, i think i can safely say that last year's was by the worst birthday i've ever had. i mean that one really took the cake (ha ha cake). i took the day off and my girlfriend had agreed to do the same. we would take a short trip to the mountains and play. maybe have a quiet lunch and we'd be back by nightfall. and a simple day like that would qualify as a fantastic day in my books.

instead she decided to go to work because she wanted to save up her vacation time and i spent the day at home watching day time tv. in the evening she took me out to dinner which was alright i suppose but what i was really looking forward was going bowling after dinner. it would be something different at least. but that didn't happen either. after dinner my friends (i.e. the people she had invited to this dinner -- not to mention that my brother was not invited to this dinner which is frankly unacceptable) were tired so we called it a night at around 9:30pm.

but wait, there were presents! surely that would make up for this exercise in mediocrity. she gave me two board games (scrabble & space chess) and this water bubbles shit with red lights from the discovery store.

while i've been told several times that i am an ungrateful asshole and that to someone else the kind of birthday i had would be perfect, i beg to differ.

this year's has much better and quite possibly the best birthday i've had in years. i spent about 7 hours last night installing a new car stereo that my brother got me for my birthday. we looked up instructions on how to get that shit done but nothing quite worked the way it was supposed to in the beginning. we broke open the old stereo and figured out the circuitry to see what wire went where, searched online, went tool shopping at midnight and worked while an ancient flashlight that i’ve had for years finally came to good use .

we started at around 8pm and by 2am we were all done. and just two hours into my birthday i concluded that this was the most fun i've had on a birthday. i felt grateful for the first time in a very long time. even though the feeling won't last. i wanted to make this blog post -- a moment in my life when i was grateful for something.
