Though I suppose it's not exactly professional to be like "so, how much money you got to give me anyway?". I guess you really just have to judge for yourself what financial position the client is in based on the information they give you. Could be a little difficult in some cases?

(May 11 07, 11:17)size of company and how much money they make is totally legit criteria.. it reflects the scope and scale at which the logo you design for them will be used. if i design a logo at it ends up on the tail of a fleet of private jets, i wanna get payed large.
also consider and discuss how they would like their final files. if they expect a thorough styleguide, that can be a massive project in itself and should be part of your estimate.
oh yeah.. and estimate.. always estimate your cost w/ # of concepts proposed. some people can be extremely fussy about their logos (rightfully so)and drag out the process FOREVER.
