the sun had set many hours ago and the glow of the television lit the room. dressed in his favorite colorful but preposterous pajamas, mikey was sitting on the floor staring at the monochrome dot pattern pretending that it was snowing in his telly.
he was well aware that there was no transmission at this hour and the dot pattern was mostly due to the thermal noise from stray electromagnetic fields, cosmic background radiation and the telly itself. he was also aware that the unpaid cable bill might be one of the reasons for the lack of variety in programming that evening.
the static noise that accompanied the hypnotic glow didn't bother him much. in fact he found it soothing and it often helped calm his nerves.
