(May 2 07, 14:53)You clearly have not read all of my previous post. I don't like the idea of anyone dying. Ever. For any reason. Can people be rehabbed, like Crouwel says? Absolutely. My faith is rooted in grace: forgiving people when they don't deserve to be forgiven. Anyone can change. I am walking proof of that. I was quite the fuck-up in high school and college, and I still make mistakes. I don't deserve on shred of the grace and forgiveness that I have been given.
HOWEVER: if justice systems offer grace to everyone, if they allow murderers to continue living, if they keep reducing child molesters' sentences and if juries continue to be swayed by stardom, personal emotions and the like, then justice systems willl continue to make themselves more and more useless.
This is why I think it could be possible for me to be persuaded against the death penalty in the future, as our justice system continues to be more and more flawed. No one can deny that it is certainly not what it used to be.
Dobs, you know...after I wrote the post about removing the hands of thieves, I thought about that one some more...and I think that is an extreme punishment in most cases. If a kid shoplifts, it would do more harm than good.
Before you declare hypocrisy on me, consider the nature of the crime. If you kill, you lose the right to live. You steal, you lose the right to own certain things. So...perhaps a better punishment for serious kleptos would be for their financial assets, etc. to be seized. So, I take back what I said about chopping off hands. I was wrong.
A government seizing the posessions of a thief does not bring them down to the thief's level. A government giving a fatal injection resulting in almost immediate death to a convicted mass murderer is not actually taking revenge.
