    i always try to identify some basic transition types in the negative space such as round/round, round/vertical, and vertical/vertical.

    using your example: "m-p" would be a vertical/vertical. "p-h" however is a round/vertical. my rule is there should be more space between a vertical/vertical than a round/vertical transition.

    once you establish the letterspacing that's right for your design, as well as the typeface, you'll find this method makes it much easier to implement consistent kerning because you always have a reference.
