There's also the possibility that WE are the most advanced race out there.
There was a scientist dude, I'll start googling, who did the maths - age of universe, statistically earliest time for life to begin in univers (cool enough, enough star cycles to produce heavier elements, etc..) statistical distribution of life supporting planets, relative time frame for life to begin anywhere, relative time for evolution to create intelligent creatures, so forth and came up with a few possibilities..it just might be that life on earth either a) arrived early - meaning we are alone - so far, b) concurrent - it's all popping up at about the same time - so we're one of many with probably similar levels of technological development, or c) we're late and everything's happened already. BUt I htink he showed mathmatically wit's probably a or b...
