i actually had to have two windows open to reply to this thread.

first, kbl, i mentioned earlier i made no plans on making this personal. so brining myself down to shit tossing would be asinine. but thank you for illustrating a point i will bring up in just a second.

interesting how you speak of usability. most pc users find a windows environment completely usable. to say you have to pay for this kind of research is absurd. countless hours of usabilities studies and market research all account for what you see today on pc's.

the ability to make a product that can fill the needs of the broad consumer is the market where the pc fits well. ballooned pricing over such things as "R&D" and "usability premiums" is fatuous. linux was and is based on open source, creaed by a guy that has a second job, maintened by consumers, and by early next year will surpass apple in total sales. linux is ultimately the tool to fight against the machine. but none seem to take that route, why? cause its not about exclusivity or the rare medium; its about looks.

if you are serious about "fighting the power" and usability get a linux box.

going to a point someone made about price, i have a pc here at home. amd xp1800 512ddr 2 40gb drives (both ful btw...time to backup shit). at this point, i have/do work on a G4. it is slower than mine. much slower. from photoshop to flash to just browsing through the web...slow. ah, but this same machine cost 2/3's more than what i paid for mine. all together, with monitor: 1300. upgrade to 1gb of ram and i have spent an extra 100+ dollars. all totalling to a machine far more capable of handling my workload than a low end man that is more expensive and less compliant.

you;ll be hard pressed to win the argument of "reverse snobbery" considering the posts from most mac users. none ever use the language of "its a great machine, try it" but more so lash out in a sort of vindictive manner as to justify the ididom "pay more, expect more...get less." there has never beenmention of the fact that pc users feel elite. quite contrary friends. it is the apple market that spawned this debate and subsequently is the one firing off the rockets of insults and defamation of character.

the point is dollar for dollar in this week economy apple needs to change is strategy. when it comes to cost, pc's are cheaper and linus is damn near free (pay a few hundred bucks for a full box or just download and set it up for free on your own box). asking for more on a base G4 than what a comparably equipped and cheaper pc is the fundamental flaw in apple's universe. pricing dictates. value is relative when the dollar is powerful.

ask honda, that's why their cars, bikes, lawnmowers, chainsaws, et al all operate at the higest possible efficiency, raise the bar on persormance, offer virtually the same perks as more expensive products but cost hudreds and sometimes thousands less. empowerig the masses, without deflating the wallets.

    + ----------------------------- +

enjoy whatever medium you choose. lets be at peace and shake hands as brothers of the same clothe from designer to designer, developer to developer and respect the choices we all make in order to make great work, regardless of what OS we choose.

    peace friends.
