    I really don't get that about the States - imo, you should for what you ask for and leave the tip as a discretionary .. well.. 'tip'.

    I mean, it's supposed to be a little extra - not something demanded.

    Agree w/ para on this one. When I waited tables in college I made $2.38/hr plus tips, so tips were completely vital. There are two arguments to be made here, and I see the vailidity of each:

    a) That tips should be tossed out the window and wait/bar/bell/parking staff should be paid more across the board per hour.

    b) The tipping system helps encourage (most of the time) timely, courteous service. Of course some people would be swayed by the exceptions as this is more of a goal than a widespread reality among tipped employees.
