    I get it just fine, actually. IMHO, there are several ways to look at this film.
    First off, you have to accept that Lynch is not interested in sticking with linear narratives. His films are more and more about textures and visual metaphor.
    *this is because the man was a painter before a filmmaker*
    Second, the film is about hallucination, and that which we impose on ourselves in times of extreme trauma and anxiety. Fred Madison kills his wife. He slips into another relaity in which he is Pete Dayton, as an attempt to escape the first reality.
    Or...is it the other way around?
    In any case, that has always been my feeling.

    Films don't always have to tell a story. They can be something else. Ask yourself...do Jackson Pollock or Mark Rothko paintings "look like something?"
