Hey mg33...CALLES definitely knows his shit, but I'm from the Miami Beach area too, although I'm living in LA now.
The boutique hotels are really nice and chill, but it all depends on your price range.
I always tell friends to check out the Marriott Courtyard. It's on 14th and Washington, right where you want to be.
It's on the same block as Espanola Way, which is a very Italian looking street. Go get dinner at Hosteria Romana and tell Marco I say hi. He's the big fat dude yelling in Italian at the chicks.
For sushi, some of those places you see in the mags are hip and cool, but way pricey and not terrific. For sushi head to 15th and Collins for Sushi Rock Cafe. I miss that place so much. So freaking good.
Joe's Stone Crab is incredible too if you've never been, but go at a really off time or just do take out and sit on the beach, otherwise you'll have a 3 hour wait.
And if you just want good raw bar seafood, head to Monty's Raw Bar (on 1st St.) and go for happy hour where everything is rediculously cheap. Stone crabs are like a buck or two a piece. Oysters are like 50ยข. Something like that.
And for low key hangouts, if you end up staying at the Standard hotel, you can walk to Purdy Lounge (a real locals place) and Joe Allen's restaurant. Also good.
You won't be seeing much coke or Tony Montana, but if you end up at Purdy Lounge ask to see the Scarface room.
Shoot your questions over this way and I'm sure CALLES or I can help ya out. I agree with all his suggestions so far.
