having a house that doesn't smell like shit is a higher priority than a site that doesn't look like shit to prob 99% of the population in regards to the plumber statement

(Apr 10 07, 12:53)exactly. Also, many people feel that those "icky" jobs are worse than designing a site, and therefore are willing to pay more. As long as they don't have to deal with the ickiness, they'll pay a reasonable amount.
When it comes to design, most people know they can't do it as well as actual designers (actually, some believe they can do it themselves but just "don't have time"), but still don't feel that it's a legitimate thing to worry too much about.
