As far as GPA goes, it really depends on what they had studied.. Its not a big deal if they have a great portfolio, but bad grades.. grading Art + Design is too subjective..
I am the head of production at a mid-size agency, and I not only do retouching but a lot of client work- and all of the interviewing as well.. (I also teach advanced photoshop production at Cecil College..)
All I can say is work hard, and have good work. "Don't be a douche" is part of it too- have a good attitude and don't be arrogant even if you think you are better then the person sitting across from you.
