I have worked for the same company for about 5 years now. After 3 years of senselessly dragging 2500lbs of glass and steel into the office each day I pitched a full time work-from-home gig. I wrote a formal proposal to my boss outlining pros/cons for the company. He greenlighted it and I moved to the boondocks. I go into the office about once a quarter for a few days (or for kickoff meetings and such).
Pros: Just a s productive as before..if not more , due to increased avaialability. I get to see my kids more, much less stressful. No gas spent on commuting
Cons: i miss the informal converstaions about projects and clients, Press checks are more difficult (as I now live 10 hours from the office)
Bottom line,: you have to be seriously motivated to do it, but the payoff can be great.
best of luck to anyone who want to give it a shot.
