i registered my .ca off some cheap canadian domain place, without the hosting, and transfered it directly to mediatemple.
its pretty easy to do. but it mostly depends on the tech service. my was done quickly without hassle. but i have an illustrator client that registered with some crappy company who's name i cant remember. anyways. the process of transfering the DNS took allmost a month.
