    8oz plain flour
    2oz sugar
    1tsp mixed spice
    1 levelteaspoon bicarbonate soda
    1-2 teaspoons ground ginger
    4 oz butter
    6oz black treacle
    2oz golden syrup
    aquarter pint of milk
    1 egg

    sieve the dry ingredients into a mixing bowl. Put the butter, treacle and syrup into a pan and heat until the fat has melted. Cool slightly then add to dry ingredients. Warm the milk in the saucepan to make sure none of the treacle and syrup is wasted. Pour over the ingredients in the mixing bowl and beat thoroughly. Lastly beat in the egg. Line a 7 inch square cake tin with greased greaseproof paper. Pour in the mixture and beat in the centre of a cool oven 300 - 325 for 11/4 11/2 hrs. test before removing from oven. (poke middle with skewer or sharp knife, if it comes away clean, the cake is ready) Leave to cool in tin for 10 mins then turn out onto cooling rack.
