Went to Portugal last year and got hooked on white port mmmmm drunk with an ice cube in the glass its cleaner and not as heavy a a red but with a subtle scented taste. Perfect with some dark chilli chocolate after dinner.
Good luck on your quest on learing about wine, one of the best books I have read is Matt Skinners Thirsty work.

He taught Jamie Oliver most of what he knows about wine and food and wine pairing. I have been to a tasting with him and hes great very unpretentious and speaks in an everyday language, the more you try and the more you learn the deeper you will get hooked... have fun :D
