one of my all time faves in the $40ish range (if you can find it) is le vieux donjon:

so smooth. think of pairing a red with a nice cheese to see how them complement each other. i don't think someone starting out with wines should just try to sip a bottle without pairing it with food. for example, a nice stilton goes so well with a heavier wine like a bordeaux.
