And why is there that crazy ass security pereimeter around their camp? They didn't throw that up when the Losties crashed that's for sure.

Possibilities:
(1) They know about the indigenous peoples and put it up so no one can come close and harm them.
(2) Also about security: The perimeter was put up after the plane crash so that no one else could disrupt how Ben and his folks live, but that's unlikely. It was probably built before then.
(3) Locke is right about Ben not wanting anyone to get off the island (...and Ben admitted that if he let people off the island it'd be a sign of weakness). And to go even further, he has traps around to catch anyone who tries to leave, despite claiming that they can leave at any time.
(4) It's for something else, that the Russian guy probably knew about.
