AppleCare has worked pretty good for me. I have a 3 year old PowerBook which during it's cover under AppleCare has had 3 new screens/lids. I've normally just left the machine with them for up to a week but always got it back all sorted within a few days.
I've had a recent issue with the hard drive myself but they weren't prepared to replace that. They ran a few tests but they gave it the ok even though it makes a nasty noise. Just make sure you have a full and recent backup of the drive when you send it in as they may well wipe it.
