Although I went to a classical conservatory for composition, I never fully got into opera. There are a few that really appeal to me though. However, it's all 20th century.
My fav: Pelleas & Mellisande (Debussy)

Lulu (Alban Berg)
Life With an Idiot (Alfred Schnitke)
Einstein on the Beach (Philip Glass)
The Cave (Steve Reich)*Note on Lulu: Lulu is largely unfinished because Berg was shot and killed before it was done. The opera has to do with the Jack the Ripper killings, and often ends at this weird moment in Act 2. It's very creepy.
