I just spent 5 months in NY on an exchange, got back at the turn of the year. Student VISAs have a shitload of paperwork, I don't know about more permanent ones. Student VISAs don't allow any you to take any kind of paid employment in the States (you get sent home). Once you're in, you're in though, so get it out the way.
