I tried to do something similar myself. My girlfriend lives in OC so I tried to go out there to live/work for a year or two. I basically just found immigration to be a catch-22 ... I couldn't get a visa without a job/sponsorship offer and couldn't get any interest from agencies without first having a visa in place.
I know there's plenty of other people that have made the move but I really don't know how. It's no easy process.
I think the best thing you can do is start researching and approaching agencies as soon as you can with the hope that you'll find one that's willing to offer you a job and help you through the visa process. Put together an awesome portfolio and try to get it in front of as many people as possible. If you can prove that you can offer an agency something that they can't find so easily in the States, you'll have more of a chance.
