The only people who should be telling us how to speak the language, imho: Seamus Heaney, Catherine Zeta Jones, and highly literate, accentless midwesterners. You brits have slanged it up just as much as Americans, if not more so by sheer dint of time passed. Not that there isnae a fond place an ma heart for the auld slange.
