yes the canon lens retracts fully.
It is one of the few compact cameras on the market right now with image stabalization. I work in a camera store. and if I were to buy a point and shoot camera right now I would get the canon sd800.
I do like the panasonc camera though it is a nice little camera. So if you do choose to go that way you should be doing alrigh.
Oh and do not buy sony. they generally have the worst image quality of the popular brands of cameras.
