It might be worth your while to spend a couple hundred on renting a basic lighting kit. Call around your area for videography supply rentals and such. Remember to add some canvases and stuff to bounce light off, and get some cool blue gels to drop over your lights. That will help. It will be easier if you have the gear to play with. I assume you are shooting digital. White in particular will wash out. Good luck!
