pretty sure its been said on here before, but you need to start up illy then turn off the appearances pane. Close and reopen illy, the appearances pane should now be turned off by default. Do your pathfinder stuff, it wont crash. If you turn the appearances pane back on during your session, make sure its turned off before you close.
extremely annoying but this fix does work!
