    the short answer is that back in the day FWA didn't charge money to submit a site, so who is really going to pay for their own portfolio to be featured when they know it will be featured in the NTB, K10K, etc. for free if it's any good.

    also, as you can see FWA has a ton of editorial content from a lot industry folk which I'm sure they feel obligated to reimburse for their time and effort.

    for me, FWA is a great resource to browse and get ideas for client work. it's always good to know what the competition is doing. the sort feature is super nice. props to the team.
