I wouldn't ditch the books, stick close with O'Reilly books and have a set project YOU want to work on to accomplish such.
That being said I learned MySQL/PHP and MSSQL/ASP without books but I do suggest them as everyone learns differently.
And we can't all be geniuses. Though we can all have different genii.
