When you say Santa Mon, do you mean Santa Monica, Calif.?
I wouldn't move down here (but I lived in the L.A. area my whole life so I'm stuck...).
There's a lot of desperate unemployed designers (and actors, too -- but that's another topic), caused by the fact that there's too much designers, not enough work due to the recession, and all these schools constantly churning out more and more designers. It's an employer's market so they can offer ridiculously low pay despite the high cost of living, esp. in "Santa Mon". Plus, California has the worst deficit in the country, which makes the economy here even sadder.
On the upside, there seems to be a lot of british peeps living in Santa Monica, people tend to be more welcoming towards the brits compared to other immigrant groups, and you're portfolio site looks great. A lot of people seem to be moving down here from all over all the time, and they seem to be able to get good jobs, big cars and nice places to live, so if you’re really focused, you may find something.
