Interesting responses in this post..those on the more conservative side seem to take the stance "Ultimately it'd her fault for submitting to this contest." While those of the more liberal bias are like "What a shitty society in that billions are spent promoting game systems so that parents desperate for their childrens affection and happiness will submit themselves to dangerous and undignified things simply to get basic human desires. (ie the desire to be a good parent, not to gain material goods)"
There is a mix of tragedy and humor in the story, but all truly tragic things have a bit of humor in them as well...but it's interesting that those who suppose personal responsibility on the part of the victim absolve responsibility of the moron who thought up this stupid contest.
I'd bet dollars to donuts zero research went into thinking one could literally drink enough water to die by the powers that be at the radio station. And holding it in has nothing to do with it..you simply put enough water into the body and even the urination system can't handle it, your blood's salinity gets fucked and water enters your cells, especially in the brain causing swelling - especially edema in the brain. When the woman complained of the headache her brain was already saturated and she needed immediate attention at the point. And that would be the first sign of anything wrong..very very dangerous contest that says to the contestant - if you start feeling bad, stop! Well, the first sign of not feeling right with this, you're already well on the way to fucked city...It's like throwing someone off a building and saying, when you get close enough to the ground, stop. (My wife is a doc and has the big brains in the family and we discussed this sad story over dinner last night...heck, even I was suprised by the idea you could drink yourself to death...)
