Nirvous propably is talking about the divx discs that were part of a failed drm-protected distribution system, very similar to dvds. The DivX codec now lives its own life as a pirated version. I don't see what is wrong with it. The encoding process is pretty advanced. Of course decoding requires quite a lot of processing power, but only really viable alternative is XDiv. I'm personally waiting for mpeg-4 standard's AVC system, which hopefully removes the hassle out of codecs.
