I lived in Abu Dhabi for a while and visited Dubai a bit. Almost got murdered in Dubai but that's a whole other story entirely.
Anyway, from what I remember, describing it like Vegas for Arabs seems about right. Its a really young and vibrant city but can be pricey. I've got a friend living over there right now, hes from Canada and isn't digging it too much though.
One thing is true though, most of the European expats are from the UK so you might have a different experience.
Another thing that was true when I was there so look into it is the fact that rent and sometimes a car were part of the benefits package depending on the company.
All in all I remember it being a nice place. Its the kind of place in the ME that they don't show on the news and thats sad. The people are friendly if not overly passionate about things. I'd visit again but it was way to warm for me to live there again, got up to around 52-53 in August.
