get a font management program like suitcase. There is already one in OSX called Fontbook that you will aready have, but it's a bit lame.
It doesn't really matter where you keep your fonts (apart from system fonts) I just have all my fonts in a folder called FONTS in my documents folder then I control them all from suitcase XI.I think there is a good free font manager that everyone on her recommends, called Linotype Fontexplorer:
