i think you gotta pay up.
friend should have renewed.
if it is worth it i believe you can issue conflict resolution request to ICANN or someone.
but since your friend failed to renew it, anyone can own it.
but i think there is a moratorium period to renew even after the expiration date. not sure.
maybe if it is "hisname.com" he might be able to have leverage to get it back.
