this is a known issue with pathfinder.
close the appearance pallet. make sure it wont reopen. (i.e. change workspace name)
restart illy. and as long as you don't reopen appearance, then it will work fine.
can't believe you didn't figure that out for yourself. so intuitive. thank you adobe.
