Because the Christian tenants of faith don't really communicate tolerance at all.

(Dec 21 06, 11:57)I disagree. Faith is personal. Most christians I know apply those beliefs to their own life. because you can't apply the consequences of your own belief to anyone but yourself.
There are groups that make a point of telling people they're going to hell and condemning people who don't agree with them, which as you pointed out would definitely be considered intolerant.
But those are the actions of extremist types, not the faith itself.
