(Dec 18 06, 09:38)I disagree. While I will be the first to borrow the quote about 'good designers using good typefaces, and great designers using good typography', I think there are now more voices than ever that require our abilities in communicating visually. Thus, a two-typeface toolbox just doesn't cut it anymore, if it ever did. I think even the most frugal designer should have no less than six typefaces for different needs, be they constraints of style, legibility, mood, historical or cultural context: at least one old-style, book-oriented serif with italics & attendant small caps + special figures, one grotesque, one humanist, one script, one geometric, and one blackletter.
I'm a creature of habit, and I have at least 30 typefaces that have served me well in my relatively short career. I believe in using great typography (I've gotten a fair bit better than my portfolio shows, thanks to the current job), I just like to see some variety!
