  You can check your alpha channel directly in the composition window. Option-click the little RGB circles at the bottom or check on the transparency icon. You can check the manual if you're not sure which these are. Like laurus said, make sure your render settings are 32-bit when you render.

  The color of the background makes absolutely no difference when you're rendering with an alpha channel. Black doesn't mean transparent.
