Not sure I agree. this could have gone another way...what if he hadn't left and they hadn't been found until they were all dead? Then people would be critical of his decision to stay.
Do you know what you would do 9 days of being stranded in the cold? 9 days. That's a long time to hold onto hope that someone will find you before you and your family are gone.
