I thought I'd bump this thread two weeks later as I have now achieved my aim and finished the production and photoshoot yesterday.
The projection idea worked in the end (after a lot of convincing studio directors).It took a lot of time and effort to get everything working properly and the angles right. I obviously couldn't use paint on our studio walls and floor so I used green electrical tape in the end.
so here's a rough crop of the photo:

Hopefully it will make for a more interesting xmas card than usual.
I should also add that the studio I work in does a mix of interior design and graphic design and so the idea of the card was to mix an architectural space with graphics.
No photoshop used!
