    Western Europe, especially countries with somewhat imperial past, like the French, German, and Brits have always had a kind of a warm spot for Russian romanticism which they like to flirt with. These kind of incidents are good for reminding people that it is an empire with long history of disrespect for own people's lives by the ones in power. There is an old Russian saying, "у нас мног&#10... люде&#10... meaning "we have lots of people" - supposedly a Tzar quote.

    During the revolution in early XX century, French communist would voluntarily go to Russia to help build communism. They were instantly jailed, because it was obvious you either had to be a spy or endlessly dumb to go straight into deepest shit.

    Apparently, they haven't learnt much since.

    I am not writing this in order to present Russians as bad guys. Not at all, I just think that western approach to Russia is very often naive. You have to know their rules if you want to play their game. EU, politically, is an artificial, powerless creature and Putin is laughing in Brussel mommy's boys faces.
