I´ve been living here for year now, and loved every second of it.
Good advice is to avoid Las Ramblas, nothing interesting to see there, if you don´t count waisted bachelor party groups, living statues and pickpockets.
Walk around El Born area after 17 when the little shops and galleries open again. Hit some galleries such as:

whit good luck you´ll be there on opening night enjoying art, free drinks and hippy people. Also new Lomo shop Barcelona: http://www.lomospain.com/tienda/…
Picasso museum, Tapies foundation and Macba worth of checking. There is lots of nice little book shops, and record shops around Macba area too.
As mentioned Le Cool website and book are good resources http://lecool.com/newsletter.php…
