ALPHA MASKS! NEVER DELETE PIXELS!!!
my all caps screaming is done for the day. seriously though try to work non destructively.
duplicate your layer turn off your background layer apply an alpha mask toyour duplicated layer and whatever you paint 100%black on the alpha mask will disappear...
black=conceals
white =reveals
